Immediate needs in Madrid

 

The first thing you need to do is to get your NIE.
The NIE is the foreign identification number. It´s a personal, unique and exclusive number, which will identify you during your entire stay in Spain.
It´s essential to obtain it in order to complete any processes involving government administration, and additionally in order to get a plan with a mobile carrier and to exchange your drivers license if you intend to drive here.

 

 

You will also need it to hire private insurance within in Spain, to apply for your social security card, to use Madrid´s public health system, or simply to open a resident bank account in a bank close to your house or workplace.

If you are going to be regularly using public transport, we recommend that you obtain a monthly commuter pass to get around all of metropolitan Madrid by bus, metro or commuter train. With these monthly passes you are able to save a lot of money.

There are other obligations you may have to take care of as well, for example:
• "El empadronamiento" (registering with the town hall where you live).
• Registering with the social security office as an employer if you wish to employ a housekeeper or nanny.
• Obtaining your license plate number (if you bring your car from outside of Spain).
• Receiving your annual tax return if you meet the requirements and your tax residence is considered to be Spain.
